Hat Design Masterclass

In this workshop, participants will learn about 2 basic Hat styles (beanie and beret) and how different crown shapings are developed using different increase/decrease techniques.

Participants will then design themselves a Hat based upon their own measurements and style requirements. Simple stitch patterns can be used, and we will consider how to incorporate shaping into the stitch patterns. Time permitting, we will start knitting in the workshop and participants can continue in their own time to complete their unique Hat.

This is a 6hr teacher led class. Woolly will talk through the styles, maths and concepts, and then armed with new knowledge, you will design their own custom fit vertically knitted Hat.

Workshop notes covering all of the techniques, including charts and illustrated tutorials where applicable will be provided.

8 students maximum

Skill Level: Suitable for intermediate knitters. Participants will need knowledge of common increase and decrease methods, competence with basic stitch combinations and patterns and be confident at working in the round on either DPNs or circular needles.

Length: 6 hrs - a light lunch will be served during class

Homework: Students will need to prepare a gauge swatch for their yarn, as the calculations in this workshop will be based on this. In the absence of a gauge swatch, we will use the ball band suggested gauge, however this may not be as accurate.

Instructor: Woolly Wormhead

Woolly is a hat architect. Hats are fascinating. They are relatively quick to knit, but they are also endlessly versatile. She thinks of her Hat designs as sculptures and 3D objects.

With an educational background in textiles and engineering, she holds a BA in Textiles and a postgrad PGCE in Art & design from Goldsmiths, London. She has always been curious about how textiles were made – this sense of curiosity continues to fuel both her work and her life. As a child she experimented with hand-dyeing, dress-making, and designing her own clothes. Later she explored silversmithing and pattern-cutting. While her background informs her work as a Hat architect, she doesn't let it define her. Woolly has set out to keep inventing new methods of knitting Hats.

Materials: Materials are not included in the price of the class. Students should bring calculator, tape measure, notepad & pencil/pen as well as 5mm to 6mm DPNs or 40cm circular needles and 100g yarn in gauge to match needles. (large gauge & needles preferred, due to time constraints!) If you have any stitch dictionaries, you are welcome to bring them.

Students will receive a 10% discount on materials bought for this class from the shop.

Cancellation Policy: In the event of a cancellation refunds will be provided if another student is available to take your place. We run a waiting list system for these eventualities but please be aware that any cancellation made close to the date of the course is less likely to be refundable.

In the unusual event that the class or course is canceled by us a full refund will of course be processed.
