When Erika Knight and I talked about what we wanted in The Signature Collection, we were both keen on including a 'perfect sweater.' The sweater that you have in your wardrobe that you want in lots of colours. The one that you wear with your favourite pair of jeans or a pair of leggings - you can dress up with a skirt or suit trousers and jewellery.
The kind of sweater you can pack for a long weekend and it's the only thing you need to bring. Long Weekend is absolutely that. It's a classic silhouette executed to perfection.
The gauge Erika has used for Origin creates the ideal fabric and drape for this type of over-sized garment.
Even though it's a classic style, it has plenty of contemporary details, such as the slightly cropped length, the balloon sleeves and the gorgeous shoulder detailing.
The sweater is worked from the top down, beginning at the back neck cast on. Stitches are increased at each end of every row until the back width is reached and then the piece is worked straight to the armhole before the stitches are placed on hold. The front begins in two halves, picking up stitches along the back shoulder slope for the first side, then gradually decreasing at the armhole edge and increasing for the front neck. Stitches held while the second side is worked, the centre front is then cast on and the two front sides joined and worked straight to the armholes. The piece is then joined into the round with the back stitches and worked seamlessly to the hem. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armholes and worked down, decreasing quickly at the end to produce a shaped balloon cuff. A roll neck is created by picking up the neck stitches around and working in rib.
It really is something you'll grab for time and time again and want in all the colours.
Long Weekend is part of the design collaboration between A Yarn Story and Erika Knight using our in-house yarn, Origin. You can find the rest of the collection here.
